Visual Log 8: Composition 2
- Contrast
- Foreground Interest and Depth
- Frame within a Frame
- Leading Lines
- Patterns and Texture
- Negative Space
- Rule of Odds
- Simplicity/ Minimalism
- Rule of Space (Leaving Room for Subject to Interact)
- Balanced Elements in the Space
=========================================================
- Contrast/ Foreground Interest and Depth/ Leading Lines/ Negative Space/ Balance Elements in the Space/ Rule of Space (Counter)
Negative Space:
- Idea: With the bird as the subject, pushed to corner by artificial object and the sky
- Contrast: Design Elements: Point, Line, and Plane
- Bold/ Graphical Shape VS Finer Organic Details
- Large foreground VS Thin Background and Anchoring Point --> Balance and Visual Contrast at the same time
-Space Contrast: Either very Close or very Far Away
- Leading Lines: Trees Branches, Blue Tube
- Foreground emphasize Depth: Evident even in its simpler form; also Lead the eye and heighten visual intensity
- A lot of Negative Space
- Counter usage of the Rule of Space: emphasize stillness of the subject
- Simplicity & Minimalism/ Balanced Elements/ Contrast of Texture/ Negative Space
- Idea: Abstract/ Gloomy mood creates a contemplative atmosphere
- Lack of Fore/ Mid/ Background Information --> Minimalist & Graphically Flat
- Balanced Elements: Light vs Needle, Dark-Light-Dark (Mark Rothko LOL)
- Contrast of Texture: Top Organic vs Bottom Artificial
- Negative Space: Comfortable for the eyes to move around
- Rule of Odds/ Leading Lines/ Contrast
- Idea: the strong, sturdy bridge structure
- Rule of Odds: 3 Columnsss!!!!!!!!
- Strong Value Contrast --> Serious/ Heaviness
- Leading lines create a dynamic Triangle
- Low Angle, dynamic triangle to increase visual intensity to further suggest the Strength
- Foreground Interest and Depth/ Leading Lines/ Contrast
- Idea: Strengthen the spectatorship, as if the viewer is being in the scene --> usually wide angle
- Foreground Interest serves two purpose:
- informs "where the viewers are standing"
- Tree branch Lead the eyes into the background
- Contrast of Space: BG: Dense trees create a wall (Closed Space) while the flatness of water and water lilies (Open Space) allow freedom for the eyes to move around the FG
- Leaves: repetitive Texture
Contrast in Patterns and Texture
- Idea: Hard clean ceramic/ plastic texture VS Soft fabric texture
- The business of pattern makes the white cup stands out
- Printed pattern VS woven pattern (Regular/ Irregular)
- Idea: Possibility of expression/ hope/ humanity in front of a seemingly immovable structure/ institution
- Hard Stony Texture vs Pattern with human touch
-Negative Space/ balanced visual intensity (dark figure vs light chalk pattern & BG)
Rule of Space/ Leading Lines/ Negative Space/ Contrast/ Pattern and Texture
- Idea: Upward, prosperous growth of the cherry blossom towards the sky
- Tree branches lead the eyes to the empty space/ moon
- Rule of Space: Negative space/Room allows/creates a sense of motion, as if the trees are invading the sky
- The busy flowers create a graphical pattern and become a flat image plane, contrast against the empty sky
- Proves how strong a Point can be, being there against all the business by itself, having an anchoring effect

Visual Log 7: Composition
- Rule of Thirds
- Low Angle VS High angle
- Dynamic Composition
- Golden Triangles
- Balanced Composition
- Unbalanced Composition
- Centered Composition
- Symmetry
- Room
=========================================================
Rule of Thirds, Slightly Higher Angle (look at line on left side)
- Theme: Mundane Urban Life in the Morning
- Repetitive Elements and Lines: Lead to the focal point
- Slightly higher angle, positioned at the image's lower portion--> character looks smaller/ overwhelmed by the surroundings
- Repetitive lines: create dynamism
*Love Is In The Air Ver. so it doesn't cause depression
Rule of thirds, Slightly High Angle, Room on the Left
- Idea: Small, elegant but Agile
- Room on the left --> to allow movement
- Slight higher angle --> to suggest its small size
- VS these big and powerful ones:
Strong Low Angle, Rule of Thirds, Room on the right
- Idea: Empathize that Natural/ Primal Energy
- Strong Low Angle: Way Bigger and Taller on screen
- Orange Eye (Most Saturated Color) near Sweet Spot: Further enhance the Liveliness on the animal
- Rule of Thirds + Leave Room on the Right
Golden Triangle (a bit off)
- Idea: Laid-back Enjoyment of the Fall Scenery
- S-Curve? More pleasing to me.
- "triangles have a nifty way of retaining the attention of the eye within the frame: the eye moves from one point to another in a continuous loop."
Centered and Symmetric Composition
Dynamic Triangles
- Idea 1: Formal/ Institutional/ Powerful Building against all hardship in a gloomy day
- Idea 2: an establishing shot of Ghost story in this building
- Structural Lines against all the Diagonal Lines pointing at the opposite directions
- Dynamic Lines create stretchy, conflicting image planes --> Strong Vision Tension
Unbalanced Composition
- Idea: Moody shot of Evening, All staff/ students left, Cutaway: Loneliness of this clock
- Clock being pushed to the very end of the frame
- Reflection implies there is a separation of inside and outside space, further suggesting that loneliness and isolation
- Large texture on the left vs Small clock
Example As Tears Go By 1989
Lack of Room for the character to move
Unbalanced Composition

Centered and Symmetric Composition
- Idea: Stillness right before the Critical moment
- All visual elements leading to the Running Legs
- Run lane create symmetry
- Imaginary line/ focal point at the CENTERCENTERCENTER
