Visual Log 7: Composition

- Rule of Thirds
- Low Angle VS High angle
- Dynamic Composition
- Golden Triangles
- Balanced Composition
- Unbalanced Composition
- Centered Composition
- Symmetry
- Room
=========================================================

Rule of Thirds, Slightly Higher Angle (look at line on left side)

- Theme: Mundane Urban Life in the Morning
- Repetitive Elements and Lines: Lead to the focal point
- Slightly higher angle, positioned at the image's lower portion--> character looks smaller/ overwhelmed by the surroundings
- Repetitive lines: create dynamism
*Love Is In The Air Ver. so it doesn't cause depression

Rule of thirds, Slightly High Angle, Room on the Left

- Idea: Small, elegant but Agile
- Room on the left --> to allow movement
- Slight higher angle --> to suggest its small size
   - VS these big and powerful ones:

Strong Low Angle, Rule of Thirds, Room on the right

- Idea: Empathize that Natural/ Primal Energy
- Strong Low Angle: Way Bigger and Taller on screen
- Orange Eye (Most Saturated Color) near Sweet Spot: Further enhance the Liveliness on the animal
- Rule of Thirds + Leave Room on the Right

Golden Triangle (a bit off)

- Idea: Laid-back Enjoyment of the Fall Scenery
- S-Curve? More pleasing to me.
- "triangles have a nifty way of retaining the attention of the eye within the frame: the eye moves from one point to another in a continuous loop."

Centered and Symmetric Composition

- Idea: Stillness right before the Critical moment
- All visual elements leading to the Running Legs
- Run lane create symmetry
- Imaginary line/ focal point at the CENTERCENTERCENTER

Dynamic Triangles

- Idea 1: Formal/ Institutional/ Powerful Building against all hardship in a gloomy day
- Idea 2: an establishing shot of Ghost story in this building
- Structural Lines against all the Diagonal Lines pointing at the opposite directions
- Dynamic Lines create stretchy, conflicting image planes --> Strong Vision Tension

Unbalanced Composition

- Idea: Moody shot of Evening, All staff/ students left, Cutaway: Loneliness of this clock
- Clock being pushed to the very end of the frame
- Reflection implies there is a separation of inside and outside space, further suggesting that loneliness and isolation
- Large texture on the left vs Small clock

Visual Log 5: Color

(Everything in terms of HSB system)

"Cinematic" Green/Blue-ish Color Grading:
- Associated with coldness, uneasiness, anxiety, metallic quality, depression/suppression, grittyness, age/ oldness, Neon/ Fluorescent, Urban Experience, Indoor Lighting/ Walls, Systemic/ Industrial

- Affinity of Hue and Saturation
- Low Saturation to allow colors blending (almost no red)
- Higher Contrast in Brightness/Value of the color
- Enhance Texture because of contrast in brightness??
- How easy to alter space

Slightly different feeling:
- Background elements (used shoes/ warm brown color) gives the image warmth

- Contrasting bright red helps eyes move around on the image

-Used Machine + Shoes --> Craftsmanship --> Human Warmth

Peacefulness/ Harmony: Affinity of Luminance and Saturation
- Carefree, liberating, peaceful quality I try to achieve in these images
- High Brightness/ Colors are very tinted --> Low contrast and smooth transition
- Low Saturation
-Pastel Colors, Cool hues (Cool red/ Cool blue) blend with each other harmoniously
-Landscape Ukiyo-e???

Pure Color: Affinity of Hue
- Strong Visual Intensity
- Stylized and Subjective
- Tweak Saturation/ Brightness to not make it look cheap
- Lomography????

Warmth vs Coldness
- warm red vs cold red/ warm blue vs cold blue
- Warm/ Coziness VS Cold Outdoor
- Emphasize mood by grading the image

Warm Yellow (INDOOR) VS Cold Red+Blue+Green (OUTDOOR)

- Warm Red and Cool Green
- High Saturation and Invasive quality --> Looks modern

How Neon has its very unique quality to make us perceive the world differently. Space and other human beings.

Big signs with high value/ low saturated color, as if overwhelmed by the bleakness of the environment. There is metaphor/ subtext in this use of color. I immediately get that it is a dystonia world, the happiness we see is empty and superficial. Attention grabbing advertisements to boost consumerism.

- The green grading affects us emotionally, but logically as a viewer I know that it's intentional. I'm still detached because of the obvious intention. The last one is way more scary because the image becomes our reality. This is my experience when I look was scrolling through his works.
